Erick Needs a Kidney

Erick Vriesinga is a 47 year old partner, dad, son and brother from Plympton-Wyoming, Ontario.

In 2021, knee pain led Erick to see a doctor. That visit led to a full panel of testing that ended with a diagnosis of Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD).

PKD is an inherited disorder in which clusters of cysts develop primarily within your kidneys, causing your kidneys to enlarge and lose function over time. Cysts are noncancerous round sacs containing fluid. The cysts vary in size and the can grow to be very large. Having many cysts or large cysts can damage your kidneys.

Erick’s only chance for a long life is a kidney transplant.

Erick was told that his kidneys would be ok for about 5 years before needing a transplant or starting dialysis.

In 2023 Erick had 3 hospital stays ranging from 4 to 8 days. He had an infection that went septic causing more strain on his kidneys.

In March of 2024 Erick received a fistula to prepare for dialysis, with the goal of ultimately getting a transplant before dialysis.
